Can I Use Truck battery for Inverter?

During long-distance driving and outdoor activities, truckers urgently need a stable power supply to support the operation of navigation, fridges and other appliances. However, conventional lead-acid batteries (e.g., car starter batteries) have limited capacity to meet the demands of high-power loads over long periods of time. As a result, truck batteries (e.g., AGM lead-acid batteries or deep-cycle batteries) are increasingly becoming a desirable alternative with their high capacity of up to 100Ah or more and excellent durability. However, the use of inverters becomes indispensable in this process and raises a number of questions: can truck batteries be connected directly to inverters? Are there potential risks associated with this usage?

Truck batteries are mainly divided into two categories:Β 

  • Lead-acid batteries: including wet-type batteries (which require regular addition of electrolyte) and maintenance-free AGM batteries (adsorption glass fiber partition technology).
  • Lithium batteries: gradually replacing lead-acid batteries, with higher energy density and cycle life.

Truck batteries offer great capacity and are capable of delivering high current output. These batteries are designed to support the high power demands of truck equipment and are capable of sustained energy release over long periods of time. Here are some of the key features of truck batteries:Β 

  • High Capacity & Output Voltage: Truck batteries typically have high Ampere-hour (Ah) values to support power needs for longer periods of time.
  • Durability and Charging Characteristics: Truck batteries are durable and easy to charge for heavy-duty environments.

Can i use truck battery for inverter

Truck batteries can be used in inverters, but need to meet specific conditions: truck batteries are usually 12V or 24V systems, which need to match the input voltage of the inverter; their high capacity (e.g. more than 100Ah) is suitable for long time power supply, but need to avoid deep discharging (no more than 50% is recommended), so as not to shorten the life of the batteries; the power of the inverter needs to be matched with the load, and is equipped with overload and short-circuit protection; in addition, it is necessary to Ensure firm connection, good heat dissipation, and avoid use in high temperature or humid environment. For frequent use, it is recommended to choose deep-cycle batteries or special energy storage batteries to improve durability.

Example: If you need to run a 500W microwave oven and a 300W TV at the same time, you need to choose an β‰₯800W inverter and leave a 20% margin.

Most traditional truck batteries are lead-acid batteries. For high-frequency use scenarios, they can be replaced with deep-cycle lead-acid batteries or lithium iron phosphate batteries to improve durability. Lithium batteries, while more expensive, are relatively lightweight, charge quickly, and have a longer lifespan. When considering the use of a truck battery with an inverter, mutual compatibility is critical. It must be ensured that the inverter can accept the voltage and current output of the truck battery. In addition, the following points should be noted when making connections:Β 

  • Use the correct wiring sequence to avoid safety issues such as short circuits.
  • Ensure that appropriate protection is set up to prevent the inverter from overloading or the battery from overheating.
  • Check the battery status regularly to ensure that it is in good operating condition.
